56 Group Wales is an exhibiting group of contemporary professional artists working across a wide range of media and concerns. As with any group, difference is overcome through dialogue, both spoken and visual.

Curation is key in the group’s creative process, and collaboration with curators importantly reveals previously unrealised connections. The 56 Group Wales (Welsh: Grŵp 56 Cymru) is an artists' organisation founded in Wales inwith the aim of promoting Welsh Modernist art and artists.

The name was originally simply the 56 Group: "Wales" was added inin response to a feeling that the organisation's "Welsh origins ought to be re-affirmed". The Welsh-language version of the name was first used on publicity in Formation: 56 group wales SET HOUSE ARTS would like to thank the 56 GROUP WALES for their belief and trust in supporting us with their work for this, our first exhibition.

The ‘Recent Works’ exhibition at St Brides has been a whirlwind of Art & History. This Spring The Art Shop is showing exciting work by nineteen current members of 56 Group Wales, one of Wales’s longest established and most prestigious exhibiting groups of artists.

Founded in as 56 Group by artists Eric Malthouse, David Tinker and Michael Edmonds, it originally had twelve members of whom Arthur Giardelli, a key figure in the Group’s history, is still a regular exhibitor. The 56 Group Wales was founded in an era when there were few opportunities to exhibit contemporary art here.

Although being rooted in Wales the group had an international outlook. When established, it had a small core of members, among them Rhondda artist Ernest Zobole, German expressionist Heinz Koppel and Arthur Giardelli.

Pete Williams is a print-maker, with a long-standing reputation as a professional artist in Wales. He is the co-founder & director of the Print Market Project Cardiff, est’ to the present day.

Originally at Chapter Arts Centre until but relocated to a converted 18th Century Barn which now operates as a fully equipped printmaking. One of Europe's finest art collections. Five hundred years of magnificent paintings, drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics from Wales and across the world, including one of Europe's best collections of Impressionist art.

Anti-form as a tendency, and soft sculpture as a continuing development in art, have received less attention still. He was head of painting at Liverpool College of Art at the time when John Lennon was a student, while from he was head of art and design at the Polytechnic of Wales.
